The tragic deception that fueled a six-century war of vengeance
In short: For six hundred years, an elite vampire assassin dedicated her life to exterminating the Lycan species. Driven by the gruesome murder of her family, she fought a sacred war, unaware that her true enemy was the very man who had sired her and promised her revenge.
Selene, the protagonist of the Underworld film franchise portrayed by Kate Beckinsale, is an elite vampire assassin known as a "Death Dealer." Born to a Hungarian family around 1383, she spent her early years as a vibrant child playing games like 'Silly Goose' with her sister, Cecilia. However, her life was shattered at age nineteen when her entire family was murdered, leaving her an orphan and traumatized. During her childhood, she enjoyed painting pictures alongside her sister. She grew up as a happy and normal child before the tragedy occurred.
The tragedy was built on a lie. Selene's adoptive father and sire, Viktor, was actually responsible for the deaths of her family, including her six-year-old nieces. To ensure her loyalty, Viktor manipulated her into believing the Lycans were the culprits. This deception fueled Selene's dedication to a "sacred" duty of exterminating Lycans, a mission she pursued with such intensity that she became a stoic, isolated soldier of the Vampire Clan. This manipulation kept her focused solely on her military duties. She avoided socialising with others outside of her elite unit.
For centuries, Selene served with blind loyalty, becoming one of the most powerful Death Dealers. Her life changed when she met Michael Corvin, a human who triggered a sense of her lost humanity. This connection eventually led her to discover the truth behind her family's death, prompting her to turn on Viktor. Her journey is defined by a transition from a soldier driven by vengeance to a woman reclaiming her capacity for love and truth. Her newfound connection to Michael eventually challenged her rigid, disciplined lifestyle. This shift ultimately forced her to confront the dark secrets of her past.
