How Jamaican dancehall star Shenseea is expanding the genre's global reach and influence
In short: Born Chinsea Linda Lee, Shenseea has evolved from a local Jamaican talent into a global force. By blending dancehall with hip-hop and collaborating with international icons like Kanye West and Christina Aguilera, she is actively widening the audience for her native sound while securing historic milestones on the Billboard charts.
Born in Mandeville, Jamaica, on October 1, 1996, Shenseea initially studied Entertainment Management at Excelsior Community College before financial constraints forced her to leave. Her rise began in 2015 when she performed at Reggae Sumfest, eventually gaining notoriety through her remix of Vybz Kartel's song Loodi. Her early success was marked by multiple Youth View Awards in 2016, setting the stage for a career defined by rapid international expansion.
Shenseea’s trajectory shifted significantly when she signed with Interscope Records in 2019. Her collaborations have been instrumental in her crossover success, ranging from the viral hit Lighter with Tarrus Riley to her featured appearances on Kanye West’s 2021 album Donda. These contributions earned her an Album of the Year nomination at the 64th Annual Grammy Awards. Her versatility is further evidenced by her 2024 Grammy nomination for Best Reggae Album for her second studio project, Never Gets Late Here.
Beyond her musical accolades, Shenseea has achieved historic breakthroughs. In July 2026, she became the first Jamaican female artist to top Billboard’s Latin Airplay chart with her collaboration Echo, featuring Daddy Yankee. This success was followed by a nomination for Crossover Artist of the Year at the Billboard Latin Music Awards. Today, she balances her music career with corporate sponsorships and continues to bridge the gap between Caribbean dancehall and the global mainstream, maintaining residences in both Jamaica and the United States.
