In short: Born in Dublin, Sinéad Keenan initially aspired to a legal career after watching American television dramas. She soon realized her true ambition was portraying lawyers rather than practicing law. Today, she is a celebrated actress known for her range across British and Irish television, film, and prestigious stage productions.

Keenan, born on 27 December 1977, grew up in Dublin as the eldest of three children. Her siblings, Rory and Gráinne, also pursued acting careers. Before finding her footing on screen, she studied sociology and history at University College Dublin. Her professional debut arrived in 1999 with the film Sunburn, where she appeared alongside Cillian Murphy. Following this, she spent a year in the Irish soap opera Fair City, portraying Farrah Phelan, before departing to avoid being typecast.

Her career expanded significantly through theatre and television. She became a member of the Royal Shakespeare Company, performing in productions such as The Comedy of Errors and The American Pilot in 2005, and taking on the role of Hermia in a 2006 staging of A Midsummer Night's Dream. On television, she gained prominence as the werewolf Nina Pickering in the supernatural series Being Human. Her filmography includes diverse projects ranging from the sitcom The Cassidys to crime dramas like Murder City and Taggart.

Critical recognition followed her performance as Melanie Jones in the drama Little Boy Blue, which earned her a Royal Television Society Programme Award for Actor in March 2018 and a BAFTA TV Award nomination the following month. She has continued to take on challenging roles, including the BBC One drama Three Families, which explored the issue of abortion in Northern Ireland. Since 2023, she has starred as DCI Jessica James in the ITV crime series Unforgotten. Outside of her professional life, she married director Chris McGill in 2012, and the couple has two sons.
