The first Black captain to lead the Springboks to World Cup glory
In short: From the township of Zwide to the pinnacle of global rugby, Siya Kolisi has rewritten South African history. As the first Black man to captain the Springboks, he has achieved unprecedented success, leading his nation to back-to-back Rugby World Cup titles and becoming a symbol of transformation.
Siya Kolisi’s journey is defined by resilience and historical milestones. Growing up in the Zwide township of Port Elizabeth, he faced significant hardship, including the loss of his mother when he was 15. His talent was recognized early when a youth tournament in Mossel Bay earned him a scholarship to Grey Junior, eventually leading him to Grey High School. This foundation paved the way for a professional career that would eventually see him become a central figure in South African sports history.
In 2018, Kolisi made history by being appointed the first Black captain in the Springboks' 126-year existence. This was not merely a symbolic appointment; it was a period of immense sporting success. He led South Africa to a 32–12 victory over England in the 2019 Rugby World Cup final in Japan. He repeated this feat in 2023, defeating New Zealand 12–11 in Paris, making him the first South African captain to lift the Webb Ellis Cup twice and only the second captain in history to win consecutive titles.
Beyond the pitch, Kolisi has become a significant social figure. In 2020, amidst the COVID-19 pandemic, he and his wife, Rachel Smith, launched The Kolisi Foundation to combat inequality, focusing on education, sport, food insecurity, and gender-based violence. His influence was further recognized in 2019 when he was named one of the 100 Most Influential Africans by New African magazine. Whether through his leadership on the field or his philanthropic work in under-resourced areas, Kolisi remains a transformative figure in modern South African culture.
