From a troubled upbringing to stardom, Stan Walker redefined the New Zealand music landscape.
In short: Stan Walker rose from a childhood marked by poverty and violence to become the first New Zealand-born winner of Australian Idol. Beyond his chart-topping pop and R&B career, he has navigated a rare genetic cancer diagnosis and become a prominent advocate for his Māori heritage through music and film.
Born in 1990, Stan Walker grew up in a household defined by the struggles often depicted in the film Once Were Warriors. His early life was shadowed by domestic abuse, poverty, and the criminal activities of his parents. Finding solace in church and music at age 15, Walker eventually moved to Australia, where he worked as a menswear shop assistant before his breakthrough on the seventh season of Australian Idol in 2009.
Walker’s debut album, Introducing Stan Walker, achieved significant commercial success, reaching number three on the Australian charts and number two in New Zealand. His career has since spanned multiple studio albums, including the pop-heavy Let the Music Play and his 2021 te reo Māori release, Te Arohanui. Beyond his recording career, he has served as a judge on The X Factor NZ and starred in films such as Mt Zion and Born to Dance, often drawing on his own life experiences to inform his performances.
In 2017, Walker faced a profound health crisis after discovering he carried a rare CDH1 gene mutation, which had previously caused the deaths of over 25 of his family members. This led to the removal of his stomach, a life-changing event he documented in his autobiography, Impossible: My Story. Despite these challenges, Walker remains a prolific artist, continuing to release music that explores themes of love, mental health, and his cultural identity, while citing Beyoncé as a primary musical inspiration.
