In short: Announced in 2012 with a 2014 launch target, the ambitious space simulator Star Citizen has become one of the most expensive entertainment projects ever produced. Despite raising over US$1 billion in crowdfunding and sales, the game lacks a final release date, sparking years of debate over its development cycle.

Led by director Chris Roberts, Star Citizen was conceived as a spiritual successor to his earlier work on the Wing Commander and Freelancer franchises. The project began with a 2012 Kickstarter campaign that raised over US$2 million, promising a comprehensive space trading and combat simulation. However, the scope of the project expanded significantly over time, leading to repeated delays and criticism regarding feature creep and the lack of a clear completion timeline.

The development process utilizes a modular approach, releasing distinct game components such as the Persistent Universe, Arena Commander, and Star Marine to backers over several years. This strategy has been marked by technical challenges, including a 2016 migration from CryEngine 3 to Amazon Lumberyard to leverage cloud integration. While the game has achieved significant milestones, such as seamless transitions between space and planetary atmospheres, it has also faced major outages and internal restructuring, including the relocation of its UK headquarters to Manchester in 2022.

Squadron 42, a standalone single-player campaign featuring a high-profile cast including Gary Oldman and Mark Hamill, has faced its own series of delays. Initially expected in 2014, its release window has been pushed back multiple times, with the most recent updates suggesting a 2027 target. Despite the controversy surrounding its extended production and monetization models, the project continues to receive regular updates, maintaining its status as a massive, ongoing experiment in crowdfunded game development.
