How one prince held the Ottoman Empire at bay for nearly half a century
In short: In the late 15th century, the principality of Moldavia stood as a vital bulwark against Turkish expansion. Led by Stephen the Great, this small territory resisted powerful neighbors through decades of relentless warfare, maintaining a fragile independence that would vanish shortly after his death.
Stephen the Great, also known as Stephen IV, ruled Moldavia from 1457 to 1504. He rose to power with the assistance of Vlad III the Impaler, the Walachian prince, and earned pan-European renown for his prolonged resistance against the Ottoman Turks. During his long reign, he navigated a landscape of intense geopolitical pressure, attempting to defend Moldavian sovereignty against both Turkish encroachments and the influence of neighboring powers like Hungary and Poland. His ascent to the throne was not a solitary feat, as he secured his position in 1457 through the support of the Walachian ruler.
The geography of the principality was significant to its defense. At its peak, Moldavia's borders stretched from the Dniester River in the north and northeast to the Black Sea and Dobruja in the south, and westward to Transylvania. This strategic position on the lower Danube made it a critical frontier in the struggle for regional dominance. The region's identity was deeply tied to the Moldova River, and the territory was originally established in the early 14th century by Vlachs led by Dragoș, who migrated from the Carpathian Mountains.
However, the era of resistance ended with the conclusion of Stephen's rule. Following his death in 1504, his son and successor, Bogdan III the One-Eyed, found the cost of independence unsustainable and was forced to pay tribute to the Ottoman sultan. During the mid-1500s, Moldavia's status shifted to an independent vassal paying tribute to the Ottomans, concluding the period of resistance led by Stephen. The loss of autonomy became a long-term reality, as the principality eventually became a tribute-paying vassal-state by the middle of the 16th century.
