In short: Steve McMichael was a rare athlete who dominated both the gridiron and the wrestling ring. After anchoring the legendary 1985 Chicago Bears defense, he transitioned into a colorful career in professional wrestling. His life was defined by intense physicality, a larger-than-life persona, and a final, courageous battle against ALS.

Born in 1957, McMichael excelled early as a multi-sport athlete in Texas before becoming a consensus All-American at the University of Texas. Drafted by the New England Patriots in 1980, he found his true home with the Chicago Bears. As a starting defensive tackle, he became a cornerstone of the 1985 championship team, earning a reputation for toughness that coach Mike Ditka later described as unparalleled. His NFL tenure included two Pro Bowl selections and a streak of 101 consecutive starts, cementing his status as a defensive force.

Following his football retirement, McMichael pivoted to professional wrestling, joining World Championship Wrestling in 1995. Initially a color commentator, he soon entered the ring, eventually joining the prestigious Four Horsemen stable. His wrestling career was marked by feuds, championship gold, and a flair for the dramatic, including bringing his dog, Pepe, to the broadcast booth. He even refereed a notable match in 2008, showcasing his enduring connection to the industry.

Beyond sports, McMichael remained a public figure in the Chicago area, engaging in radio broadcasting, coaching the Chicago Slaughter, and even running for mayor of Romeoville in 2012. In 2021, he shared his diagnosis of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. His resilience during his illness earned him the ALS Courage Award. He was honored with induction into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2024, shortly before his death in 2025 at age 67. Posthumous analysis later confirmed he suffered from chronic traumatic encephalopathy.

McMichael’s legacy is that of a man who refused to be defined by a single role. Whether he was sacking quarterbacks, bickering with wrestling rivals, or facing a terminal diagnosis with public grace, he maintained a distinct, aggressive, and authentic identity. His transition from the NFL to the squared circle remains one of the most successful crossovers in sports history.
