A cosmic road trip for Supergirl ends in a box-office crash landing
In short: The 2026 film Supergirl reimagines the iconic heroine as a jaded, party-loving antihero on a galactic quest to save her dog. Despite its ambitious scale and a star-studded production team, the project struggled to find its footing, ultimately becoming a significant financial disappointment for the newly rebooted DC Universe.
Directed by Craig Gillespie and written by Ana Nogueira, Supergirl serves as the second installment in the DC Universe (DCU) under the leadership of James Gunn and Peter Safran. The narrative draws heavily from the 2021–22 comic miniseries Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, following Kara Zor-El as she traverses the galaxy to secure an antidote for her poisoned pet, Krypto. Unlike the more optimistic versions of the character seen in previous media, this iteration is defined by trauma and a cynical outlook, shaped by her upbringing on a surviving fragment of the destroyed planet Krypton.
The production faced a complex development history, evolving from a scrapped project within the former DC Extended Universe into a cornerstone of the DCU's first chapter, Gods and Monsters. Milly Alcock was cast in the lead role, supported by an ensemble including Matthias Schoenaerts as the antagonist Krem of the Yellow Hills and Jason Momoa as the mercenary Lobo. The film’s aesthetic was heavily influenced by road-trip cinema, with Gillespie aiming for a distinct, gritty tone that stood in contrast to the more traditional heroism of Superman, portrayed by David Corenswet.
Despite these creative intentions, the film’s path to release was fraught with turbulence. Following mixed critical reception during test screenings, DC Studios intervened in the post-production process, leading to shifts in the musical score and editorial oversight. When it finally hit theaters in June 2026, the film failed to resonate with audiences, earning roughly $126.4 million against a production budget estimated between $170 million and $186 million. This commercial shortfall marked a difficult moment for the studio's attempt to launch a cohesive new cinematic universe.
