A Slavic name for a Romanian capital of trade
In short: The name Târgoviște reveals a linguistic history that predates its status as a Romanian powerhouse. Derived from an old Slavonic word for "marketplace," the city served as a vital commercial hub for centuries, blending Slavic etymology with Transylvanian organization and Romanian rule.
The city's identity is rooted in its role as a center of commerce. Its name is a Slavic acquisition from the Middle Ages, specifically originating from the old Slavonic word for "marketplace." This linguistic root is not unique to Romania; similar place names appear across South Slavic regions like Bulgaria and Serbia, as well as West Slavic areas including Slovakia, the Czech Republic, and Poland.
While the name is Slavic, the city's administrative DNA was heavily influenced by Saxon colonists from Transylvania who arrived between the late 13th and early 14th centuries. These settlers introduced unique organizational features to Wallachia, including official titles like birău and folnog. They even established a night watch using the Latin term viglu (from vigilia) rather than the standard local terms used in the region.
Târgoviște served as the capital of Wallachia from 1418 to 1659, a period of significant economic and military activity. It was a major trade hub connecting with Poland, Brașov, and Sibiu. The city's wealth was evidenced by large dwellings with Central European-style cocklestoves and a massive treasure trove of 6,284 silver coins found in the Saxon quarter. Its importance eventually waned after the capital was moved to Bucharest in the late 17th century.
The city remains a site of profound historical weight, from the 1457 siege by Stephen V Báthory to the 1989 execution of Nicolae Ceaușescu. Today, it balances this heavy heritage with a modern underground culture, including an urban sports scene that produces independent films and organizes festivals at the Tricolorului Square.
