From New Zealand shorts to Marvel blockbusters: the unique rise of Taika Waititi
In short: Taika Waititi began his career crafting intimate short films in New Zealand before evolving into a global director of Marvel blockbusters. His journey from an Academy Award-nominated short film to winning an Oscar for his screenplay work reveals a distinct comedic voice that transcends both independent cinema and major studio franchises.
Waititi launched his career in the early 2000s, quickly gaining recognition with his 2003 short film Two Cars, One Night, which secured an Academy Award nomination. His transition to feature-length storytelling began with Eagle vs Shark in 2007, followed by the Sundance-premiered Boy in 2010. These early works established a foundation for his signature blend of humor and emotional depth, which would later define his more mainstream projects.
A pivotal moment in his career arrived with the 2014 horror comedy What We Do in the Shadows, co-created with Jemaine Clement. This project demonstrated his ability to blend genres, a skill he later applied to the 2016 adventure comedy-drama Hunt for the Wilderpeople. His versatility allowed him to move seamlessly into high-budget studio filmmaking, directing Marvel Studios' Thor: Ragnarok in 2017, where he also performed the role of the alien Korg. His creative reach expanded further with the 2019 black comedy Jojo Rabbit, which earned six Academy Award nominations and secured him a win for Best Adapted Screenplay, alongside a Grammy Award for the film's soundtrack.
Beyond feature films, Waititi has maintained a significant presence in television and commercial work. He directed episodes for the sitcom Flight of the Conchords and contributed to the Star Wars universe by directing an episode of The Mandalorian in 2019, while also voicing the character IG-11. His television portfolio includes co-creating Reservation Dogs and starring in Our Flag Means Death. His commercial work is equally notable, ranging from Air New Zealand safety videos featuring Peter Jackson to a 2013 Tesco advertisement that featured a character reminiscent of Thor, foreshadowing his eventual collaboration with Marvel Studios.
