From child actor to tabletop titan: the multifaceted career of Taliesin Jaffe
In short: Taliesin Jaffe began his career as a child actor, holding a Screen Actor's Guild membership at just seven months old. Today, he is a central figure in the world of tabletop gaming, best known for his work on the hit web series Critical Role and his contributions to game design.
Born in Los Angeles to a family deeply embedded in the film industry, Jaffe’s early life was defined by professional acting. By the age of seven months, he was already a member of the Screen Actor's Guild, eventually appearing in films like Mr. Mom and 2010: The Year We Make Contact. He also held television roles, including a regular spot on the 1985 sitcom Hail to the Chief and a recurring part on She's the Sheriff. However, the pressures of the industry eventually led him to quit acting as a child after a discouraging audition experience.
Jaffe’s pivot toward his current career began with a childhood interest in anime. Alongside friends in an AV club, he experimented with creating his own English dubs using school equipment. This hobby proved foundational; after high school, he used a demonstration tape of these dubs to launch a professional career in voice direction and anime dubbing. His versatility also extended to video games, where he frequently voiced the Flash in titles such as Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe and Injustice 2.
His current prominence stems largely from his involvement in Critical Role, an actual play web series that evolved from a private Dungeons & Dragons game into a massive production company. The show’s success is evidenced by its 2019 Webby Award wins and a record-breaking Kickstarter campaign that raised over $11 million for an animated adaptation. Beyond performing, Jaffe has moved into game design, co-creating the Candela Obscura campaign setting for the Illuminated Worlds system. As the show's Lightkeeper, he continues to shape the narrative landscape of modern tabletop gaming.
