From Casting Assistant to Literary Star: The Evolution of Taylor Jenkins Reid
In short: Before she became a household name in contemporary fiction, Taylor Jenkins Reid navigated the film industry and worked in a high school. Her path to literary success began with a debut novel in 2013, eventually leading to a series of bestsellers that explore the lives of iconic, fictional women.
Born in Maryland in 1983, Reid initially pursued a career in film production after graduating from Emerson College with a degree in media studies. Her early professional life in Los Angeles included a stint as a casting assistant, a background that perhaps informed the cinematic quality of her later writing. It was not until she was 24 that she secured her first literary agent, eventually publishing her debut, Forever, Interrupted, in 2013. This initial work established a recurring theme in her writing: the profound navigation of grief and complex human relationships.
Reid gained significant recognition for her exploration of fame and identity. Her 2017 novel detailing the life of a reclusive Old Hollywood star became a critical and commercial success, while her 2019 work, which utilized an oral history format to chronicle a 1970s rock band, earned the 2020 Goldsboro Books Glass Bell Award. These titles, alongside Malibu Rising and Carrie Soto Is Back, form what is often referred to as her quartet of famous women set in California. The final installment, released in 2022, focuses on a retired tennis player attempting to reclaim her legacy.
Her most recent work, Atmosphere, published in 2025, marks a departure into the 1980s Space Shuttle program. To ensure authenticity, Reid spent months in Houston, Texas, conducting research at NASA’s Mission Control Center. She dedicated this ninth novel to Paul Dye, a long-serving flight director whose memoir proved essential to her process. Now living in Los Angeles with her family, Reid, who publicly identified as bisexual in 2025, continues to see her work adapted for the screen, with major streaming platforms developing several of her narratives into television series.
