In short: Tether Limited has grown from a 2014 startup into a global crypto titan. By issuing the world's largest stablecoin, USDT, the company has become a massive source of liquidity, recently eyeing a staggering $500 billion valuation while diversifying into everything from gold to Bitcoin mining.

Founded in 2014 by Brock Pierce, Reeve Collins, and Craig Sellars, the company originally launched as Realcoin. It rebranded to Tether in November 2014 to reflect its mission of linking digital tokens to traditional currencies. Its flagship product, USDT, was designed to maintain a one-to-one value with the U.S. dollar, providing a stable alternative to volatile cryptocurrencies. Initially, the company operated on the Omni protocol. It later expanded its reach to include the Ethereum and Tron networks.

The company's ascent has not been without controversy. In 2021, the CFTC fined Tether $41 million for misleading statements regarding its reserves, finding that between 2016 and 2018, the firm held less fiat currency than the amount of USDT in circulation. Additionally, a 2021 settlement with the New York Attorney General saw parent company iFinex pay $18.5 million to resolve allegations that Bitfinex had borrowed from Tether's reserves to cover shortfalls.

Today, Tether is a massive financial force. By September 2025, the amount of USDT in circulation surpassed $170 billion, making up nearly two-thirds of the total stablecoin market cap. The firm has expanded into gold-backed tokens (XAU₮) and has diversified into Bitcoin mining and media investments, such as a $775 million investment in Rumble in late 2024. Under CEO Paolo Ardoino, the company has shifted its corporate base toward El Salvador, seeking to leverage the nation's crypto-friendly regulatory environment. The firm also introduced a euro-linked token and a Mexican peso stablecoin to serve Latin American markets. Furthermore, Tether has invested in sustainable mining operations in Uruguay to utilise renewable energy.
