In short: Launched in 2013, The Alternative sought to bypass traditional party structures by developing policy through public collaboration. While it initially gained traction as a green, pro-European force in the Danish parliament, the movement soon faced internal turmoil, leadership crises, and high-profile departures that nearly dismantled the organization entirely.

Founded by Uffe Elbæk and Josephine Fock, The Alternative emerged as a self-described political movement rather than a conventional party. Its early strategy centered on political laboratories, where policies were crowdsourced from the public rather than dictated by a central committee. This approach emphasized climate change mitigation and a critique of traditional economic growth models. By 2015, the party secured nine seats in the Folketing, establishing itself as a notable presence in Danish politics.

The party's trajectory shifted dramatically following the 2019 general election, where it won five seats. As Elbæk stepped down, a leadership contest led to the election of Fock in early 2020. Shortly after, anonymous allegations surfaced regarding her past conduct, including claims of verbal abuse and physical intimidation. These accusations triggered a severe internal rift, leading to the resignation of several key figures, including the founder Elbæk, who stated he no longer recognized the organization he helped build.

Despite predictions from analysts that these departures signaled the end of the party, it managed to survive. Under the leadership of Franciska Rosenkilde, who took over in 2021, the party sought to consolidate green representation. In the 2022 general election, The Alternative secured 3.3% of the vote, resulting in six parliamentary mandates. This recovery highlighted the party's resilience, even as it navigated the complex challenges of maintaining a movement-based identity within the rigid structure of national governance.
