In short: Before Robert Pattinson took the cowl, the project was a different franchise entirely. Moving away from the established cinematic universe, director Matt Reeves reimagined Batman not as an invincible icon, but as a flawed, second-year vigilante navigating a city drowning in systemic corruption and class warfare.

The origins of the 202/2 film reveal a significant creative pivot. Originally announced in October 2014 with Ben Affleck set to star and direct, the project was initially intended as part of the DC Extended Universe (DCEU). However, following Affleck's departure from the director's chair in January 2017, Matt Reeves took over and fundamentally reworked the narrative. He stripped away the DCEU connections to focus on a younger, more inexperienced Bruce Wayne, drawing stylistic inspiration from the New Hollywood era and the noir sensibilities of Alfred Hitchcock.

The film's narrative depth relies on a complex web of corruption. Rather than a simple battle between good and evil, the plot follows Batman and Lieutenant Jim Gordon as they investigate Edward Nashton, a forensic accountant turned serial killer known as the Riddler. The investigation uncovers a history of violence involving Gotham's elite, including the crime boss Carmine Falcone and the Wayne family itself. The story explores themes of class conflict and inequality, as the Riddler uses terrorism to target the city's upper class, ultimately triggering a catastrophic flood of Gotham City.

Technically, the production was a massive undertaking, utilizing Industrial Light & Magic's StageCraft virtual production technology. Despite the delays caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, which halted filming between 2020 and 2021, the film became a commercial powerhouse. Grossing over $772 million worldwide against a budget of roughly $185–200 million, it became Warner Bros.'s highest-grossing pandemic-era release. The film's success has paved the way for the 'Batman Epic Crime Saga,' including the 2024 spin-off series, The Penguin.
