Can a crime drama spin-off successfully reinvent the West Coast hip hop scene?
In short: Set in 1990 Los Angeles, The Drop: A Snowfall Saga follows Wanda Bell as she attempts to pivot from a recovering addict to a music industry powerhouse. As gang warfare intensifies in South LA, the series explores the volatile intersection of street life and the rise of mainstream rap.
Developed by Malcolm Spellman following the conclusion of the six-season run of Snowfall, The Drop: A Snowfall Saga serves as a direct spin-off. The series focuses on Wanda Bell, played by Gail Bean, and her husband Leon Simmons, played by Isaiah John. Set roughly four years after the events of the original series, the narrative finds Wanda navigating the early 1990s West Coast hip hop landscape. Her ambitions are centered on transforming the genre into a mainstream force, a mission she pursues through her 19-year-old cousin, Lamar Kinsey, and the volatile rapper Artillery.
The production timeline reflects a steady progression from concept to screen. The project entered early development in 2023, shortly after Snowfall approached its final season. FX ordered a pilot in March 2025 and officially ordered the project to series in November 2025. The title was eventually announced on June 2, 2026. When the series premiered on September 8, 2026, it featured an ensemble cast including Asante Blackk as Lamar, Peyton Alex Smith as James Kinsey, and Mykelti Williamson as the family patriarch, James "Big Daddy" Kinsey.
Critical reception for the first eight-episode season has been largely positive, though perspectives vary on its execution. On Rotten Tomatoes, the season holds a 100% approval rating from five critics, while Metacritic shows a weighted average of 76 out of 100. While some critics, such as Kaiya Shunyata of RogerEbert.com, praised the performance of Asante Blackk, others like Alison Herman of Variety felt the focus on family conflict occasionally distracted from the broader music industry narrative. Despite these nuances, the series has been noted for its vivid realization of the era and its use of sound, including a posthumous Nipsey Hussle track as its opening theme.
