The era when English kings ruled more of France than the French king
In short: For a brief period in the 12th century, the English crown held a vast dominion stretching from Scotland to the Pyrenees. This was the Angevin Empire, a massive collection of territories where the language of power was not English, but Old French.
The Angevin Empire was a sprawling collection of lands forged through strategic marriages, inheritance, and conquest. At its peak between 1154 and 1214, the English crown controlled territories that extended from the borders of Scotland down to the Pyrenees Mountains in southern France. This realm was so expansive that the English monarchs actually governed more French land than the French king himself.
The empire's foundation was laid by Henry II, who was crowned King of England in December 1154. A French-born ruler from the county of Anjou, Henry inherited Normandy from his mother, Matilda, in 1150, and became Count of Anjou in 1151. His influence grew significantly in 1152 when he married Eleanor of Aquitaine, a union that brought her vast southern French lands under his control. Over two decades, he expanded his reach into Brittany, northern England, south Wales, and eastern Ireland.
However, the empire's stability was constantly threatened by internal family rivalries. Henry's sons—Henry, Richard, and Geoffrey—often clashed with one another and with their father. Even Richard I, who took the throne in 1189, faced immense pressure, including being shipwrecked and imprisoned in Austria. The empire's decline accelerated under King John, who lost Anjou and Normandy to the French king. While the French eventually invaded England in 1216, the Plantagenet descendants of this era would continue to hold the English throne for another 400 years.
This period fundamentally altered the English identity. Following the Norman Conquest of 1066, Old French became the dominant language of the English royal court, the legal system, and the administration. While Latin remained the language for official records, the spoken language of the ruling elite was French, creating a linguistic divide between the aristocracy and the common people.
