The ancient roots of democracy may predate European arrival
In short: This PBS documentary series challenges the standard narrative of American history by exploring the sophisticated civilizations that existed across the Americas long before European contact.
The series investigates a history spanning 15,000 years, showcasing massive cities, advanced systems of science, art, and writing. It highlights how 100 million people were once connected by complex social networks and spiritual beliefs across two continents.
Specifically, the program explores how a tapestry of shell beads in upstate New York may have inspired the foundations of modern democracy. By examining diverse traditions—from Peruvian temples to Pacific Northwest potlatch ceremonies—the series reveals a legacy of advanced culture created by Native American people that continues today.
