The secret dimension protecting history's most dangerous magical artifacts
In short: Imagine a library that exists in an alternate dimension, guarding relics like Excalibur and Pandora's box. For centuries, a secret group has worked to keep these powerful items out of the wrong hands. This is the premise of The Librarian, a franchise centered on a brilliant but insecure protector of magic.
The franchise began with a series of fantasy-adventure films produced by TNT, starring Noah Wyle as Flynn Carsen. Rather than a traditional muscle-bound superhero, Carsen is portrayed as an insecure, brilliant perpetual university student. His role is to protect a secret collection of magical artifacts—such as the Ark of the Covenant and the Spear of Destiny—housed in an alternate dimension located beneath a public library. The original films were brought to life by Dean Devlin through his company, Electric Entertainment. This project was inspired by a pitch from David Titcher, who also wrote the initial movie.
The narrative expanded from these original films into two television series: The Librarians and The Next Chapter. The first series follows a team known as the Annex, which includes characters like Colonel Eve Baird and Jacob Stone, an oil rigger with a 190 IQ. This team battles various organizations, such as the Serpent Brotherhood, to prevent magical items from being misused. The series features deep lore, revealing that the caretaker Jenkins is actually Sir Galahad of King Arthur's Camelot. The team includes Cassandra Killian, a mathematician with the gift of synesthesia. Additionally, Ezekiel Jones serves as an international master thief and hacker.
The franchise has also explored different eras and locations. The Next Chapter, which premiered in May 2025, moves the setting to a Belgrade, Serbia annex. This new team includes Vikram Chamberlain, an active Librarian from 1847 transported to 2025, and Connor Green, a conspiracy theorist. The franchise's reach extends beyond the screen into tie-in novels by Greg Cox and various comic book series, exploring the vast mythology of the Library's thousands of artifacts. The Belgrade location features Elaine Astolat as the immortal caretaker. This new chapter also introduces Dr. Lysa Pascal, a scientist who inherits the local castle.
