How Amazon built a new language and world for Middle-earth's Second Age
In short: To bring J.R.R. Tolkien's Second Age to life, the production team behind The Rings of Power did more than just film scenes. They constructed an entire design language, invented new writing systems, and assigned distinct regional dialects to each culture to ensure the series felt like a lived-in, authentic world.
The production of the first season of The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power was a massive undertaking that aimed to visually align with Peter Jackson's previous film trilogies while remaining a distinct entity. To achieve this, the team established a war room where they defined the unique design language for every Middle-earth culture. This effort included the return of calligrapher Daniel Reeve, who was tasked with creating entirely new writing systems for specific cultures, alongside his work on maps and traditional calligraphy.
The creative team prioritized cultural differentiation through sound as well as sight. Dialect coach Leith McPherson, who previously worked on The Hobbit films, developed specific linguistic identities for the show's diverse inhabitants. Elves were given a standard English accent, while Dwarves adopted Scottish tones. The Harfoots were assigned Irish accents, and the Southlanders were given Northern English speech patterns. These choices were intended to help the audience immediately identify the origins of different characters within the vast, complex setting of the Second Age.
Beyond language, the production was a technical feat of global coordination. The art department operated across nine time zones, with 30 illustrators producing roughly 38,000 pieces of concept art. The show was the first production to be entirely cloud-based, allowing technical data and footage to be shared globally. This infrastructure proved vital when the COVID-19 pandemic forced production halts in March 2020. Despite the logistical challenges and the massive investment—with final qualifying expenditure in New Zealand reaching NZ$532.5 million—the team remained focused on building a sustainable foundation for the entire series.
