The deliberate dismantling of America's global news broadcasting

In short: For decades, the Voice of America served as a primary conduit for American stories abroad. However, recent executive actions have fundamentally altered its reach, transitioning from an agency of original reporting to one with severely restricted staffing and limited programming during pivotal international conflicts.

The Voice of America (V.O.A.) was established by the U.S. government to project stories of freedom and democracy globally. A key component of this mission was its Persian Service, which began its current form in 1979 following the Iranian Revolution. At its peak, the Persian Service was one of V.O.A.'s largest departments, producing news reports and talk shows that reached nearly a quarter of Iran's adult population.

The infrastructure of this media presence underwent a radical shift during Donald Trump's second term. In March 2025, an executive order reduced the parent agency to its legal minimum. Shortly thereafter, Kari Lake was appointed to lead global media operations with the stated mission of shutting down the agency. This resulted in 1,042 out of 1,147 staffers being placed on paid leave, effectively gutting the organization's capacity for independent journalism.

The consequences of these cuts became visible during the coordinated air strikes on Iran and Israel in February. While the Persian Service previously maintained correspondents on the Iranian border to gather firsthand accounts from those fleeing the country, it had no journalists reporting in the region at the time of the strikes. Programming was reduced to just one hour a day, and coverage often reflected these staffing shortages—such as carrying live speeches rather than producing original reports.

This transition highlights a broader mechanism of media control described in historical contexts: the use of propaganda techniques and deliberate censorship to shape public belief. By systematically reducing the number of journalists and limiting reporting capabilities, the narrative of what is shared with the world can be narrowed, moving away from diverse firsthand accounts toward centralized messaging.
