How an adult sitcom pitch became a beloved family adventure
In short: Before it was a staple of Nickelodeon animation, The Wild Thornberrys was envisioned as a mature adult sitcom for Fox. This transformation from edgy comedy to a family-friendly odyssey through the world's wildest habitats created a unique legacy of adventure and secret magical abilities.
The series, created by a team including Arlene Klasky and Gábor Csupó, originally followed a very different trajectory. Initially pitched as an adult-oriented animated sitcom for Fox, the concept was eventually retooled for Nickelodeon. When it premiered on September 1, 1998, it became the eleventh Nicktoon produced by the studio, following the success of hits like Rugrats and Aaahh!!! Real Monsters.
At the heart of the show is the Thornberry family, a group of nomadic wildlife documentary filmmakers traveling the globe in the ComVee, an amphibious, multifunctional vehicle. The narrative centers on 12-year-old Eliza Thornberry, who possesses the secret ability to communicate with animals. This gift was bestowed upon her after she freed Shaman Mnyambo, who had been transformed into a warthog as punishment for eating a shaman's prized sheep.
The family dynamic is as varied as the landscapes they visit. Nigel Thornberry, an eccentric British naturalist, leads the group alongside his American wife, Marianne, a skilled camera operator. Their children include the 16-year-old, fashion-conscious Debbie and the adopted son, Donnie, a feral boy raised by an orangutan in Borneo. Even the family's chimpanzee, Darwin, plays a vital role as Eliza's best friend and a voice of reason.
Spanning five seasons and 91 episodes, the show concluded on June 11, 2004. The franchise expanded beyond the small screen with theatrical releases, including The Wild Thornberrys Movie in 2002 and the crossover Rugrats Go Wild in 2003. Through their global travels, the Thornberrys navigate both the perils of the wild and the complexities of family life, often finding moral lessons through their encounters with the animal kingdom.
