How a sitcom survived four seasons of low ratings to reach syndication
In short: The American sitcom 'Til Death aired on Fox from 2006 to 2010, consistently battling below-average ratings. Despite its struggle to find a stable audience, the show secured a surprise fourth season renewal. The secret was not its popularity, but a strategic financial discount that made the program viable for syndication.
Created by the husband-and-wife team Josh Goldsmith and Cathy Yuspa, 'Til Death centered on the domestic lives of Eddie and Joy Stark, a couple married for 23 years living in Cheltenham Township, Pennsylvania. The show’s narrative evolved significantly over its run, shifting from a focus on the Starks' interactions with their newlywed neighbors, Jeff and Steph Woodcock, to the inclusion of Eddie's friend Kenny Westchester and, eventually, the arrival of the Starks' daughter Ally and her husband Doug, who lived in a biodiesel-powered Airstream in the backyard.
The production history of the series was marked by instability, including frequent time-slot changes and the impact of the 2007–2008 writers' strike, which disrupted filming and forced the network to air episodes out of sequence. By the third season, ratings were low enough that Fox pulled the show from its November schedule. However, in January 2009, the network unexpectedly renewed the series for a fourth season. This decision was driven by Sony Pictures Television, which offered Fox a significant licensing discount to ensure the show reached the episode count necessary for syndication.
The final season became notable for its unconventional broadcast, as the network aired a mix of new episodes alongside previously unaired content from the third season. The series finale aired on May 23, 2010, with the final remaining episodes burned off in June. Despite its rocky tenure on network television, the show eventually found a second life in syndication, appearing on networks such as WGN America, Spike, and GetTV between 2011 and 2020.
