A family's tragic end in a Florida master-planned community
In short: In December 2019, a quiet Florida community was shaken by a gruesome discovery. After authorities responded to disturbing texts, they found a family deceased in their home. The motive remains a tangled web of financial fraud, shifting testimonies, and claims of apocalyptic visions.
The murders of the Todt family occurred in Celebration, Florida, a master-planned community in Osceola County. Those killed were Megan Todt, her husband Anthony, their three kids—Alek, Tyler, and Zoe—plus Breezy, the family dog. The discovery was made in January 2020, after authorities responded to unsettling text messages sent from the family's phones and noted that mail had piled up on the porch.
Investigators revealed that Anthony Todt, a physical therapist, had been involved in significant healthcare fraud. By April 2019, it was discovered he was charging patients for care they never received, using the funds to pay for the family home and trips to Disney World. He was also over $100,000 in debt to New York City firms. While investigators believe Megan and the children were unaware of the fraud, the financial pressure was a key element of the investigation.
The legal proceedings were complicated by Anthony Todt's inconsistent testimonies. His first story involved Megan attempting suicide following the children's deaths, though he later argued he was rescuing them from the 'Apocalypse' to reach the afterlife. In 2022, he was convicted of four counts of first-degree murder and animal cruelty. He was sentenced to four consecutive life sentences without the possibility of parole, plus an additional year for the death of the family dog.
The case also holds a dark historical connection: Anthony was four years old when he witnessed his mother, Loretta, survive a shooting attempt ordered by his father, Robert Todt, in 1980. Robert was sentenced to 5–10 years in prison for the attack.
