How a football injury redirected an American student toward country music stardom
In short: Before he was charting on the Billboard Hot 100, Tucker Wetmore was a business major playing football in Montana. A sudden physical setback forced a pivot from the gridiron to the piano, leading him to Nashville and a burgeoning career in modern country music.
Born on November 5, 1999, Tucker Payson Wetmore’s musical foundation was laid much earlier than his professional career. At age 11, inspired by the legendary Jerry Lee Lewis, he taught himself to play the piano. This early self-instruction would eventually become the cornerstone of his songwriting as he transitioned from his upbringing in Kalama, Washington, to the competitive music scene of Tennessee. His formative years were spent in Kalama, a town located north of Vancouver, Washington. He completed his secondary education at Kalama High School in 2018.
Wetmore's path to Nashville was not linear. While studying business and information technology at Montana Technological University in Butte, he was a student-athlete playing football. However, an injury brought his athletic career to an abrupt end. This pivot led him to move to Nashville in 2020, where he began releasing promotional singles such as "Kiss My A$$", "Another Shot", and "She's Trouble" throughout 2021. The shift to the music industry followed his departure from the university in Butte. This period of transition preceded his move to the Tennessee music hub.
His professional momentum accelerated through strategic industry partnerships. After signing with Back Blocks Music, he established an additional partnership with UMG Nashville. This period saw his first significant chart success; in 2024, "Wine into Whiskey" entered both the Billboard Hot 100 and the Hot Country Songs charts. Following the digital release of "Wind Up Missin' You" in late March 2024, which served as his country radio debut in June, Wetmore released his debut album, What Not To, on April 25, 2025. The track "Wind Up Missin' You" arrived on digital platforms on March 29, 2024. This release preceded his official entry into country radio programming.
