From viral internet shorts to Hollywood horror royalty, the rise of Tyler Gillett
In short: Tyler Gillett began his career crafting low-budget, high-concept digital shorts that captivated millions online. Today, he is a powerhouse director behind modern horror staples like the Scream franchise. His journey from the camera department to the top of industry power lists reveals how digital-native talent is reshaping contemporary cinema.
Born in Flagstaff, Arizona, and a 2004 graduate of the University of Arizona, Gillett initially cut his teeth in the camera department on the production of the Will Ferrell film Semi-Pro. His early creative momentum grew through the collective Chad, Matt & Rob, where he collaborated with Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Chad Villella. This group gained massive traction by blending comedy, sci-fi, and horror in interactive shorts, eventually accumulating nearly 100,000,000 views online. This digital success provided the foundation for his transition into feature filmmaking.
Following the dissolution of his first collective, Gillett co-founded Radio Silence. The group made an early mark with their segment in the 2012 horror anthology V/H/S, which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival. Gillett’s career trajectory accelerated with the 2019 comedic thriller Ready or Not, which earned critical praise and a Saturn Award nomination. He subsequently took the helm for the fifth and sixth installments of the Scream franchise, with the latter winning Best Movie at the 2023 MTV Movie & TV Awards.
Beyond his directorial work, Gillett is known for his versatility as a producer and his unexpected cultural footprint. In 2020, he appeared on the podcast Reply All to solve a personal mystery regarding an elusive 1990s pop song. The resulting episode, The Case of the Missing Hit, became a cultural phenomenon, with The Guardian labeling it perhaps the greatest podcast episode ever produced. By 2026, Gillett’s influence was cemented when he was named one of the 100 Most Powerful Directors in Hollywood by New York Magazine.
While his horror films like Abigail have garnered significant critical attention and inclusion on numerous best-of-year lists, Gillett’s work remains defined by a signature style developed during his early internet years. Whether directing for major studios or producing entries in the V/H/S series, he continues to balance mainstream success with the genre-bending sensibilities that first brought him to prominence.
