In short: Founded in 1954 by Sun Myung Moon, the Unification Church evolved from a small Korean religious group into a sprawling international network. Known for mass Blessing ceremonies and controversial claims of financial exploitation, the movement views history as a divine mission to complete the work Jesus Christ left unfinished.

Sun Myung Moon, born in 1920, claimed that Jesus appeared to him in 1935, charging him to finish the mission of establishing an ideal, sinless human lineage. This theology, codified in the Divine Principle, posits that Adam and Eve failed God by misusing love, leaving humanity under the influence of Satan. Moon taught that he and his wife, Hak Ja Han, were the 'True Parents' tasked with restoring the world to God's original intent through the 'Blessing' of marriage.

The movement's rapid expansion, beginning in Seoul, eventually spanned over 100 countries. By the 1970s and 1980s, the organization—often colloquially called 'Moonies'—became a lightning rod for controversy. Critics accused it of being a dangerous cult that brainwashed members and exploited them financially. In the United States, the church faced intense scrutiny, including congressional hearings and a 1982 tax evasion conviction against Moon, which supporters framed as religious persecution.

Beyond theology, the movement built a vast, diverse empire encompassing media corporations like The Washington Times, seafood industries, and political organizations. In 1994, Moon inaugurated the Family Federation for World Peace and Unification to broaden the movement's reach. However, the organization has faced significant legal and social challenges in recent years, particularly in Japan, where the Supreme Court confirmed a 2026 decision ordering the church to dissolve following years of intense scrutiny and the 2025 arrest of leader Hak Ja Han.
