In short: While the United States Polo Association is the official steward of American polo, it is also a massive commercial force. Beyond managing tournaments and handicaps for thousands of players, the organization operates a global retail empire that generated $2.4 billion in sales in 2023 through over 1,100 outlets.

Founded in 1890, the United States Polo Association (USPA) was established to standardize rules and coordinate matches for a sport that had only arrived in the U.S. in 1876. Its first chairman, H.L. Herbert, introduced a handicapping system in 1888 that remains the foundation for balancing competition today. Throughout the early 20th century, the association navigated the rise of polo as a high-society spectacle, with matches at the Meadowbrook Polo Club in New York attracting up to 20,000 spectators during the 1913–14 season.

The sport faced significant challenges as the 20th century progressed, particularly during the Great Depression and World War II, when the mechanization of the military ended the era of cavalry-based polo. The USPA survived by evolving, shifting its focus from a society-exclusive pastime to a broader base of professional players and corporate-sponsored events. By the 1960s and 1970s, the association moved its headquarters from New York to Oak Brook, Illinois, and eventually to Lexington, Kentucky, before settling in Lake Worth, Florida, in 2015. Today, it oversees more than 4,500 members and 250 clubs, with programs like Team USPA and Work to Ride dedicated to fostering new talent.

Parallel to its sporting mission, the USPA has become a retail powerhouse. Since launching its lifestyle brand in 1981, the association has expanded its reach into 190 countries. Its apparel and footwear are sold in major retailers like Walmart and Target, and it continues to open flagship stores in high-profile locations ranging from Boston to Dubai. This commercial success provides a stark contrast to the association's origins as a volunteer-led committee, illustrating how a niche sporting body transformed into a multi-billion-dollar global fashion brand.
