The University of Iowa pioneered creative writing and coeducation in American higher education.
In short: Founded in 1847, the University of Iowa is a research powerhouse that redefined the academic landscape. It was the first public university to admit men and women equally and the first to accept creative work as a thesis. Today, it remains a global leader in writing, research, and professional education.
Established just 59 days after Iowa joined the Union, the University of Iowa has long served as a progressive force in American academia. It holds the distinction of being the first public university in the United States to adopt a coeducational policy, admitting men and women on an equal basis in 1855. This commitment to inclusivity extended to civil rights; the university granted a law degree to an African American student as early as 1879 and featured an African American on a varsity athletic squad by 1895.
The university is perhaps most famous for its transformative approach to the arts. In 1922, under Carl Seashore, it became the first institution to accept creative projects—such as poetry collections or musical compositions—as theses for advanced degrees. This innovation paved the way for the Iowa Writers' Workshop, founded in 1936. As the nation's first creative writing program, it became the prototype for hundreds of others and remains one of the most selective graduate programs in the country, typically admitting fewer than five percent of applicants.
Beyond the humanities, Iowa has maintained a rigorous research profile, classified among R1 Doctoral Universities with very high research activity. Its impact on the state is profound, educating a significant majority of Iowa's dentists and half of its physicians. Despite facing major challenges, including a devastating flood in 2008 that caused hundreds of millions of dollars in damage, the university has consistently rebuilt and evolved, maintaining its status as a member of the Association of American Universities and a hub for innovation in fields ranging from standardized testing to sustainable energy.
