In short: Long before the southern cities of Babylon and Sumer rose to prominence, a different landscape held the cultural advantage. In the fertile uplands of Upper Mesopotamia, a unique geography of rivers and plains fostered a civilization that predated the famous southern empires.

While the world often associates Mesopotamia with the southern plains of Babyloni, the region's history began with a period of northern cultural superiority. Until approximately 4000 BCE, the northern reaches of Mesopotamia held a cultural advantage over the south. This area, often called al-Jazīra or 'the island,' encompasses the uplands and outwash plains of modern southeastern Turkey, eastern Syria, and northwestern Iraq.

The geography of this upper region is defined by its relationship to the Tigris and Euphrates rivers. Unlike the southern lowlands, which are characterized by flat alluvial land and heavy silt deposits that cause frequent flooding, the north includes eroded hills, incised streams, and the Sinjar plain. This landscape is bounded by the mountains of Anatolia to the northwest and the Zagros Mountains to the northeast.

The survival of these ancient populations depended heavily on rainfall and water management. In the southern plains, the ground can remain too dry for cultivation for at least eight months of the year, necessitating the invention of complex artificial irrigation and canal networks. In contrast, the northern zones provided a more stable environment for agriculture without such intensive intervention. This stability allowed the north to flourish early on, though the south eventually overtook it by mastering the challenges of their more volatile, river-dependent environment.

Today, the region remains a vital agricultural hub, with parts of western Syria described as 'Syria's breadbasket.' However, the area faces modern challenges, including significant droughts in the late 20th and early 21st centuries.
