How a Polish death metal band accidentally named an American rock group
In short: Formed in 1983, Poland's Vader evolved from traditional heavy metal into a death metal powerhouse. Their influence is so profound that a comment by Queens of the Stone Age frontman Josh Homme about their sound directly inspired the name of the American rock band Eagles of Death Metal.
Founded in Olsztyn by Piotr "Peter" Wiwczarek and Zbigniew "Vika" Wróblewski, Vader emerged during the same year as death metal pioneers Death and Possessed. While they began as a heavy and speed metal act, the band transitioned into death metal by 1986. Their breakthrough came with the 1990 demo Morbid Reich, which sold nearly 10,000 copies—a massive figure for a demo—and secured them international attention. By 2002, Billboard reported that the band had sold approximately 500,000 releases worldwide.
The band's name, inspired by the Star Wars character, became a fixture in the extreme music scene. Their lyrical content often draws from H. P. Lovecraft, World War II, and science fiction. Beyond their own discography, which includes twelve studio albums and a thirteenth planned for 2025, Vader's legacy is woven into the broader rock landscape. Josh Homme, while being introduced to death metal, famously described Vader's sound as the "Eagles of death metal," a phrase that eventually birthed the name of his own band.
Vader has navigated significant lineup changes, with Wiwczarek remaining the sole constant member since the band's inception. The group has endured tragedy, including the 2005 death of long-time drummer Doc, yet they have maintained a relentless touring schedule, performing at major venues like the Silesian Stadium in Chorzów, where they opened for Metallica in 2004. Today, the band continues to refine their signature style, characterized by mechanized riffing and Wiwczarek's distinct, intelligible vocal delivery.
