In short: Rising from a career marked by early rejections due to his complexion, Vijayakanth became a titan of Tamil cinema. Known as 'Captain,' he transitioned from an action icon to a political leader, leaving a mark through both his cinematic roles and his humanitarian efforts within the film industry.

Born Vijayaraj Alagarswami in Madurai on 25 August 1952, Vijayakanth’s path to stardom was far from certain. Despite having no cinematic background, he pursued acting with intense passion, even after facing early setbacks. In 1978, a photo shoot at Rasi Studios helped him gain attention, leading to his first film appearance in 1979's 'Inikkum Ilamai,' where he first adopted the screen name Vijayakanth. His father, who managed a rice mill in Keeraithurai, was initially worried about his lack of academic interest. Despite this, his administrative talent eventually surprised his family.

His career trajectory saw him evolve from a supporting actor into a massive commercial star. He became famous for portraying 'angry young man' characters and action-heavy roles, often playing law enforcers or vigilantes. This persona earned him the nicknames 'Captain,' following the 1991 film 'Captain Prabhakaran,' and 'Puratchi Kalingar' (revolutionary artist). His filmography is vast, spanning over 150 films, including hits like 'Sattam Oru Iruttarai' and 'Chinna Gounder.' He was once an antagonist in the 1982 film Om Shakti. Additionally, he appeared in the first 3D Tamil film, Annai Bhoomi, alongside Radha Ravi.

Beyond the screen, Vijayakanth was a significant political and philanthropic figure. He founded the Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam party in 2005 and served two terms as a Member of Legislative Assembly from 2006 to 2016, representing Virudhachalam and Rishivandiyam. As president of the Nadigar Sangam from 2000 to 2006, he was noted for resolving the association's debt and establishing a charitable trust to provide pensions for low-income industry members. His humanitarianism, including demanding meal equality for all crew members on set, drew comparisons to former Chief Minister M. G. Ramachandran. He was posthumously honoured with the Padma Bhushan in early 2024. This prestigious award recognised his significant contributions to Indian society.
