The character who survived a planned early exit in Breaking Bad
In short: Walter White Jr. Vince Gilligan initially planned to kill the character early on, similar to Jesse Pinkman. Instead, the teenage son of the protagonist became a central figure in a family unraveling through crime, cancer, and massive deception, ultimately choosing a new identity to distance himself from his father.
Portrayed by RJ Mitte, Walter White Jr. is the son of Walter White and Skyler White. The character is defined by his struggle with cerebral palsy, which manifests through impaired motor control and speech difficulties, necessitating the use of crutches. This portrayal required Mitte to undergo specific training, including learning to walk with crutches and slurring his speech to ensure authenticity.
Throughout the series, Jr. remains largely oblivious to his father's double life as the meth kingpin Heisenberg. He even creates a website to solicit donations for his father's cancer treatment—an effort that gained media attention. To protect the family, Walt's lawyer, Saul Goodman, laundered drug money through the site by arranging for fictional donations to make the fundraising appear successful.
The character's arc is marked by a profound sense of betrayal. After learning his father's connection to the death of his uncle Hank, Jr. mistakenly concludes that Walt killed him. This disillusionment leads him to adopt the alias "Flynn"—a name derived from actor Errol Flynn—permanently. By the end of the series, he rejects his father's attempts at financial support, leaving his father to watch him from afar.
The character's role was so significant that series creator Vince Gilligan considered including him in the film El Camino: A Breaking Bad Movie, though he ultimately decided to focus on Jesse Pinkman's life instead. Interestingly, the breakfast scenes featuring Jr. were a result of Gilligan's personal affinity for the meal.
