The slow, centuries-long transition from Norse paganism to Christianity

Why did the Vikings become Christians? · 16:11 · Video: Knowledgia · Watch at the source

In short: The conversion of the Vikings was not a sudden cultural shift but a gradual process. This video explores the early missionary efforts that predated the famous Viking raids.

While the Viking Age is often associated with paganism, Christianity had been attempting to enter Scandinavia as early as the 700s. These initial missionary efforts were small in scale and failed to leave a significant lasting impact on the region's culture.

The first clearly traceable organized mission occurred in 823. To create a Christian foothold, Bishop Ebo of Rheims was sent by the Carolingian Empire into Denmark, yet his mission achieved only minor results.
