The American Revolution's failed expansion into the northern wilderness

Why didn't the American Revolution Spread Into Canada? · 12:32 · Video: Knowledgia · Watch at the source

In short: The United States once offered Canada a seat at the table of the new republic—no questions asked. Yet, despite aggressive military campaigns and diplomatic overtures, the revolutionary spark failed to ignite in the north, leaving a permanent border and a complex, shared history of missed opportunities.

The American Revolution was not merely a localized rebellion; it was an ambitious movement that sought to expand the reach of republicanism. From the very beginning, the nascent United States viewed Canada as a potential partner. This was codified in the Articles of Confederation in 1777, which offered Canada immediate admission into the union with all its advantages. This was a unique provision, as any other territory seeking to join the country would have required the approval of nine out of the thirteen existing states.

When peaceful diplomacy failed to sway the British colony, the Continental Army turned to force. In June 1775, George Washington led an invasion of Quebec. His public rhetoric was carefully calibrated; in his "Address to the Inhabitants of Canada," he claimed the army's goal was "not to plunder, but to protect" the inhabitants. However, the military reality was swift and brutal. On 31 December 1775, the first overseas incursion by the Thirteen Colonies concluded following a major loss at the Quebec City citadel.

Historians now grapple with why this episode remains so obscure. Mark R. Anderson notes that the Quebec campaign often sits in the footnotes because it does not fit neatly into the national narratives of either country. Yet, it remains a foundational moment. It represents the first major test of American expansionist ideology and the beginning of a long, complicated process of defining Canadian identity in opposition to, and in conversation with, the American revolutionary project.
