In short: William Zabka is best known for portraying Johnny Lawrence, the iconic antagonist in 1984's The Karate Kid. Yet, his career extends far beyond the dojo. From Academy Award-nominated filmmaking to directing music videos and exploring complex dramatic roles, Zabka has spent decades evolving far beyond his early typecast as a bully.

Born in 1965 in New York City, William Zabka grew up in a creative household with parents involved in film production and music. After moving to California, he attended El Camino Real Charter High School and briefly studied film at California State University, Northridge. His acting career began abruptly when he dropped out of college during his first semester to play Johnny Lawrence in The Karate Kid. Despite having no formal karate training at the time, his background as an accomplished wrestler helped him land the role, which he later supplemented by learning Tang Soo Do.

Following his breakout, Zabka appeared in several 1980s films, including Just One of the Guys and Back to School, as well as the television series The Equalizer. Seeking to move past his reputation for playing class bullies, he shifted his focus in the 1990s and 2000s toward independent filmmaking. His work behind the camera earned significant recognition; in 2004, he received an Academy Award nomination for co-writing and producing the short film Most. He also directed music videos for artists like Rascal Flatts and produced documentaries focused on humanitarian efforts in Africa.

Zabka’s career saw a major resurgence in 2018 with the debut of Cobra Kai, a series that revisited the world of The Karate Kid three decades later. Serving as both a lead actor and co-executive producer alongside Ralph Macchio, Zabka received critical praise for his portrayal of a complex, aging Johnny Lawrence. Beyond acting and producing, he is a dedicated musician who studied at the Dick Grove School of Music and has performed live. Today, he continues to balance his acting work, including a recurring role in the series Scarpetta, with his personal passions for surfing and martial arts.
