In short: The WZ-551 was China's first wheeled infantry fighting vehicle, but its journey was anything but smooth. Despite being a versatile platform for everything from assault guns to air defense, early versions were plagued by engine issues and technical setbacks that forced a complete redesign to achieve success.

The WZ-551 project began in 1979, aiming to create China's first wheeled infantry fighting vehicle. While the project was ambitious, the initial models faced significant hurdles. The original ZSL-90 variant, certified in 1990, suffered from engine problems that limited its service and prevented successful export of most versions. It is estimated that fewer than 100 units of the Type 90 were ever produced. The development of this chassis was heavily influenced by the Mercedes-Benz 2060 truck. Furthermore, the project was initially a competitor to the WZ-523, which was developed in parallel.

To overcome these limitations, engineers developed the WZ-551A, which was certified in 1994 as the ZSL-92. This redesigned version replaced the water-cooling engine with a more reliable air-cooled diesel engine, such as the 320 hp Deutz BF8L413F. This modification significantly improved the vehicle's performance, particularly in high-altitude regions and during cross-country travel. This updated configuration also introduced a distance between axles that remained consistent across the entire vehicle. This change helped resolve the significant gaps found in earlier models.

The WZ-551 chassis proved remarkably adaptable, serving as a foundation for a wide variety of specialized platforms. Beyond standard infantry fighting vehicles and armored personnel carriers, it has been used for command vehicles, anti-tank missile carriers, and even the Yi-Tian air defense system. While the original design struggled, the evolution into the ZSL-92 and its derivatives allowed the platform to achieve much greater export success and military acceptance. The platform's versatility is further evidenced by its use in the PTL-02 assault gun. It also supports the HJ-9 missile carrier for various military operations.
