In the 22nd century, humanity fights for control of space using god-named mecha weapons
In short: Created by Hideo Kojima and Konami, the Zone of the Enders franchise explores a future where Earth exploits colonies near Jupiter and Mars. Central to this conflict are Orbital Frames, powerful mecha powered by a high-energy ore called Metatron, which serve as the ultimate tools for both liberation and destruction.
Set in the late 22nd century, the series depicts a solar system divided by class and geography. Earth's ruling powers impose harsh, exploitative taxes on colonists living on Mars and in orbit around Jupiter, labeling them as Enders. This systemic oppression fuels the rise of resistance groups like Bahram, who seek to challenge Earth's dominance using advanced technology discovered on the moon Callisto.
The narrative hinges on the Orbital Frames Jehuty and Anubis, two mecha named after Egyptian deities. These machines are not merely weapons; they are the keys to a devastating superweapon known as Aumaan. The story follows various pilots, such as the young colonist Leo Stenbuck and the ex-Bahram operative Dingo Egret, as they navigate the moral complexities of war, the value of life, and the artificial intelligence A.D.A., which is programmed to self-destruct Jehuty to prevent its misuse.
While the franchise achieved moderate success, its commercial performance was inconsistent. The first game, released in 2001, benefited from including a demo for Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty, but the 2003 sequel suffered from poor release timing. Despite positive critical reception for the games' action and visuals, the series faced criticism for repetitive dialogue and short story modes. Attempts to revive the franchise through an HD collection in 2012 were marred by technical issues, and a long-planned third installment was ultimately cancelled.
