The $750,000 surrealist experiment that defied theatrical distribution
In short: In 2007, Adult Swim attempted a feat never repeated: adapting a series into a theatrical feature film. This surrealist odyssey of origin stories and bizarre action grossed over five million dollars on a tiny budget, yet it remained a cult artifact because its distributor refused to release it widely.
Produced by Matt Maiellaro and Dave Willis, the film premiered in New York City on 10 April 2007 before its 13 April theatrical release. Despite a $750,000 budget, it grossed $5.5 million, becoming the first Adult Swim series to receive a theatrical run and the second Cartoon Network-owned property to do so after The Powerpuff Girls Movie (2002). Due to the latter's box office failure, Warner Bros. declined distribution, leaving the film a cult artifact released on DVD in August 2007. Production featured guerrilla marketing, including a Boston bomb scare and an April Fools' Day television broadcast.
Narratively, the film is an action piece and convoluted origin story featuring the Plutonians (Emory and Oglethorpe), the Cybernetic Ghost of Christmas Past from the Future, and Walter Melon. The plot involves the "Insanoflex" exercise equipment and a trip to Egypt. It features cameos by Bruce Campbell, Tina Fey, and Neil Peart of Rush, concluding with a meta-narrative twist revealing the characters' origins as a nine-layer bean burrito named Burrito.
