The world's first news agency evolved into a global advertising giant
In short: Long before digital algorithms and social media feeds, there was Havas. Founded in 1835 as the world's first news agency, this French institution has undergone centuries of restructuring, boardroom coups, and massive acquisitions to become a multinational powerhouse operating in over 100 countries.
The origins of Havas trace back to 1835, when Charles-Louis Havas established the world's first news agency. This historical foundation is significant, as the modern Agence France-Presse news agency can trace its lineage directly back to the original Havas. Over the decades, the organization transitioned from news reporting into a diversified communications group, eventually becoming a major player in the global advertising landscape.
The company's history is marked by complex corporate maneuvers and intense power struggles. In the late 1990s, Vivendi acquired Havas in a deal valued at €6 billion (£4.05 billion). This era saw significant shifts in branding and leadership, including a period where the group operated under the name Eurocom and later Euro RSCG. The company has faced intense internal conflict, most notably during a 2005 boardroom coup that saw CEO Alain de Pouzilhac deposed and replaced by Vincent Bolloré as board chairman.
Today, Havas is a massive multinational operating in more than 100 countries. Its service offerings are vast, ranging from digital advertising and media planning to sports marketing and human resources. While the company has expanded through strategic acquisitions—such as Search Laboratory in 2022 and CA Sports in 2025—it has also faced modern scrutiny. In July 2024, four of its agencies, including Havas London and Havas New York, lost their B Corp status following work performed for Shell plc.
The company remains a significant force in global media, with its headquarters located in Puteaux, France. Through various reorganizations and structural shifts, it has maintained its position as a central hub for communication consulting, media buying, and diverse marketing services across the globe.
