In short: Dodge revived a legendary name for its first new model in over a decade. But while the badge evokes 1950s American muscle and stock car dominance, the modern vehicle is actually an Italian-made crossover, highlighting a complex evolution of brand identity and global manufacturing.

The Dodge Hornet name carries significant historical weight. It first gained fame with the Hudson Hornet (1951–1957), which dominated NASCAR stock car racing in the early 1950s—a legacy so enduring it was later popularized in the film Cars. After a period of use by American Motors Corporation for compact cars, Chrysler acquired the trademark and eventually chose to revive it for its first new model since 2011.

The modern Hornet, revealed in August 2022, represents a radical shift in production and engineering. Unlike its namesake ancestors, this compact crossover SUV is manufactured at the Stellantis factory in Pomigliano d'Arco, Italy. It serves as a rebadged and restyled variant of the Alfa Romeo Tonale, sharing the Stellantis Small Wide 4x4 LWB platform used by the Jeep Compass. While it maintains American branding, its mechanical DNA is European.

Despite its Italian roots, Dodge tailored the Hornet specifically for North America. It was offered exclusively with all-wheel drive and positioned as the brand's most affordable model. The lineup included a 2.0 L I4 engine for the GT trim and a first-of-its-kind plug-in hybrid (PHEV) system for the R/T trim, which features dual electric motors and a 'PowerShot' mode providing a temporary 25 hp boost.

The vehicle's lifecycle was brief. Despite its debut as a performance-oriented crossover, it faced significant headwinds from slow sales and a new 25% import tariff introduced in July 2025. These economic pressures led to the suspension of production in August 2025, with Dodge officially ending production of the Hornet in January 2026.
