A global spectacle: how millions watched the Princess of Wales's final farewell
In short: On 6 September 1997, the world paused as a royal ceremonial funeral began in London. While the ceremony was held at Westminster Abbey, the scale of the mourning was unprecedented, drawing an estimated 2 to 2.5 billion viewers across the globe to witness a moment of profound historical significance.
The funeral of Diana, Princess of Wales, was a royal ceremonial event rather than a state funeral. It commenced at 9:08 am in London, marked by the tolling of the tenor bell of Westminster Abbey. The procession included eight members of the Welsh Guards accompanying the coffin, which weighed approximately 250 kg due to its traditional lead lining. This solemn journey through London lasted one hour and forty-seven minutes before the ceremony moved to the Abbey. The coffin was carried on a gun carriage by riders from the King's Troop. It was also escorted by mounted police along Hyde Park.
The scale of the mourning was immense. While 2,000 people attended the service in Westminster Abbey, the television audience in the United Kingdom averaged 32.10 million viewers. Globally, the event was one of the most-watched televised occurrences in history, with estimates suggesting between 2 and 2.5 billion people watched worldwide. To accommodate the crowds, two screens were erected in Hyde Park to relay the service. Over a million spectators gathered along London's roads to view the parade. This massive turnout was accompanied by a rain of flowers from bystanders.
The ceremony featured significant cultural elements, including a performance by Elton John, who sang a revised version of 'Candle in the Wind' with new lyrics by Bernie Taupin. The service concluded with a private burial at Althorp Park, the Spencer family estate. Diana was laid to rest on an island within an ornamental lake, a location chosen by Lord Spencer to ensure the site could be visited in private, away from the public crowds that had gathered in London. The burial was carried out by the 2nd Battalion of the Princess of Wales's Royal Regiment. Diana was dressed in a black woollen cocktail dress designed by Catherine Walker.
