The unreleased game that finally arrived on a miniature console
In short: When Nintendo released the Super NES Classic Edition, it included a holy grail for gamers: Star Fox 2. Originally cancelled in 1996 due to fears of looking dated against the PlayStation, this sequel was finally made playable by unlocking it after completing the original Star Fox.
The Super NES Classic Edition, released on September 29, 2017, serves as a dedicated emulation device for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System. Although it employs identical internal components to the prior model—specifically an Allwinner R16 SoC featuring 256 MB of DDR3 memory and four ARM Cortex-A7 CPUs—it brought major improvements. Most notably, the controllers feature 4.5-foot (1.4 m) cables, a substantial increase from the 2.5-foot (0.76 m) cables provided with the NES Classic Edition.
The console's software environment is a custom Linux-based operating system utilizing emulators developed by Nintendo's European Research & Development (NERD) team. These emulators are capable of handling specialized hardware requirements, such as the Super FX chip used in games like Star Fox. Interestingly, the console's design varies by region: the North American version mimics the straight-angled grey-and-purple aesthetic of the original SNES, whereas the Japan and PAL releases adopt the rounded-edge Super Famicom design.
The launch was marked by significant logistical challenges. A technical glitch at Walmart on July 21, 2017, led to accidental pre-orders that were later cancelled, sparking widespread criticism. Demand proved overwhelming, leading to bot-driven pre-orders and a massive resale market on eBay. Consequently, Nintendo extended the production of the unit through 2018, despite an original plan to halt manufacturing at the end of 2017. By the end of its production run in December 2018, the console had become a significant commercial success, contributing to combined sales of over 10 million NES and SNES Classic units by September 2018.
