Can we really compare legibility and readability across different texts?
In short: This review shows how inconsistent definitions and variables make comparing legibility and readability difficult. A virtual lightning talk from 2019 highlights the need for clearer standards in instructional text design.
The study reveals that prior research on legibility and readability has lacked consistent definitions and clear variables, making replication and comparison across studies nearly impossible. The review focuses on typographic and substrate variables, such as font size, spacing, and paper quality, which can significantly affect how text is perceived. The author, Helen Hendaria Kamandhari, presents findings from an integrative review of 44 books, two websites, 83 journal articles, and four theses, emphasizing the need for standardized measurements to allow meaningful comparisons.
The analysis points out that assessing typography and material-related factors can involve either fixed or comparative figures, and unclear explanations can lead to misunderstandings when attempting to reproduce or evaluate findings between various investigations. This lack of comparability undermines the reliability of findings and hinders progress in instructional text design. The study concludes that a more unified approach is needed to ensure that future research can build on previous work effectively.
