In short: Ryan Briscoe is a rare talent who mastered both open-wheel IndyCar racing and high-stakes endurance sports car competition. From his early karting success in 1993 to winning the prestigious 24 Hours of Daytona in 2020, Briscoe has navigated a career defined by resilience, international travel, and remarkable adaptability on the track.

Born in Sydney in 1981, Ryan Briscoe began his professional journey in karting before moving to Europe to compete in Formula Renault. By 2002, he had secured a role as a test driver for the Toyota Formula One team. His path eventually led him to the United States, where he joined Target Chip Ganassi Racing in 2005. His early IndyCar years were marked by both promise and peril; a violent 2005 crash at Chicagoland Speedway left him with broken clavicles, requiring eight weeks of intensive rehabilitation in Italy.

Briscoe’s career reached a high point during his tenure with Penske Racing between 2008 and 2012. In 2008, he became the sixth driver in IndyCar history to earn his first career win while driving for the team. His 2009 season remains his most successful in the championship, where he led for much of the year before finishing third overall. Beyond his open-wheel achievements, he became the first Australian to claim pole position at the Indianapolis 500 in 2012.

The latter half of his career showcased his prowess in endurance racing. He secured class victories at the 12 Hours of Sebring and the 24 Hours of Daytona, the latter of which he won in both 2015 and 2020. His versatility allowed him to thrive in various categories, including the American Le Mans Series and the IMSA WeatherTech Championship. Now a naturalized American citizen, Briscoe remains a notable figure in motorsport, having competed at the highest levels across three decades.
