In short: In 1994, Sterling Marlin achieved a rare feat in NASCAR history. Driving for Morgan-McClcore Motorsports, he secured his first career win during the Daytona 500. He proved it was no fluke by winning the same prestigious race again the following year, becoming one of only five drivers to ever win consecutive Daytona 500s.

Sterling Marlin's ascent in NASCAR was marked by a historic breakthrough at the Daytona 500. His first victory came in his 279th career start during the 1994 race, driving the No. 4 Kodak-sponsored Chevrolet. This achievement was notable not just for the win itself, but for the patience required; it was the most starts any driver had recorded before their first win, a record later tied by Michael Waltrip in 2001. He drove the No. 4 Kodak-sponsored Chevrolet for Morgan-McClure Motorsports during this breakthrough. This victory marked the culmination of a long journey through various racing teams.

Marlin's dominance continued into 1995, when he became one of only five drivers to win consecutive Daytona 500s—joining the ranks of Richard Petty, Cale Yarborough, Denny Hamlin, and William Byron. That season, he achieved a career-best third-place finish in the standings, recording three wins, including victories at Darlington and Talladega, alongside 22 top-ten finishes and an average finish of 9.84. During that successful 1995 campaign, he secured additional victories at Darlington and Talladega. His performance helped him reach a career-high third place in the season standings.

His career also faced intense scrutiny following a 2001 accident at Daytona. As the last lap unfolded, Marlin's vehicle struck Dale Earnhardt's rear bumper at turn 4, playing a role in the accident that claimed Earnhardt's life. While the incident drew significant public backlash and death threats, a NASCAR investigation cleared Marlin of any wrongdoing. Despite the controversy, he rebounded to tie his career-best points finish of third that same year, winning races for Dodge at Michigan and Charlotte. He managed to secure a victory at Michigan International Speedway for Dodge that same year. He also claimed the UAW-GM Quality 500 at Charlotte during that season.
