A desperate man enters a lethal game of Russian roulette for a fortune
In short: In the 2010 thriller 13, a naive man named Vincent Ferro stumbles into a high-stakes underground competition where wealthy spectators bet on human life. Forced to participate in a series of deadly Russian roulette rounds, Ferro must survive against impossible odds to win a life-changing sum of money.
Directed by Géla Babluani, the 2010 film 13 is an English-language remake of his own 2005 Georgian-French original, 13 Tzameti. The narrative follows Vincent Ferro, played by Sam Riley, who assumes the identity of a deceased man to secure a job he believes will solve his financial woes. Instead, he is transported to a secluded mansion where he is stripped and searched for surveillance equipment before being thrust into a brutal game of Russian roulette organized for the amusement of elite gamblers.
The competition is structured in rounds of increasing lethality. Participants, identified by numbers, must spin the cylinders of their revolvers and fire when a light bulb illuminates. In the first round, each player aims at the person in front of them with one bullet in their gun. As the game progresses, the number of bullets increases, forcing Ferro to rely on luck and the deaths of others to survive. The tension is compounded by the presence of spectators like Jasper Bagges, portrayed by Jason Statham, who wagers on the competitors, including his own brother, Ronald.
The film features an ensemble cast including Mickey Rourke as Patrick Jefferson, a former prisoner sold into the game, and Curtis '50 Cent' Jackson as an escort. Despite the star power, the production was met with harsh criticism. Critics, including those from The New York Times and The Hollywood Reporter, argued that the remake lacked the mysterious, gritty atmosphere of the original. Reviewers specifically pointed to the decision to film in color rather than black and white, and the inclusion of unnecessary character backstories, as factors that undermined the film's momentum. On Rotten Tomatoes, the film holds an 8% approval rating, with an average score of 3.8/10, reflecting a consensus that the remake failed to capture the tension of its source material.
