In short: Richie Furst, a former Wall Street hopeful turned Princeton student, loses his tuition money to a rigged online poker site. He travels to Costa Rica to confront the site's owner, Ivan Block, only to find himself entangled in a dangerous web of blackmail, bribery, and international criminal schemes.

Directed by Brad Furman and released in 2013, Runner Runner explores the high-stakes world of online gambling through the eyes of Richie Furst. After losing his funds to a site he proves is statistically rigged, Richie seeks out Ivan Block, the mastermind behind the world's largest gambling empire. Block, initially impressed by Richie's discovery of software manipulation, recruits him with the promise of millions. However, Richie soon discovers that the organization is built on corruption, including Ponzi-like financial structures where player deposits are treated as personal capital.

The narrative intensifies as Richie is caught between the ruthless Block and an aggressive FBI agent named Shavers. Shavers, lacking legal jurisdiction in Costa Rica, employs unethical tactics to force Richie into becoming an informant. As the plot unfolds, the film depicts a landscape of systemic bribery, where local officials are bought and sold, and threats of violence—including encounters with crocodiles—are used to maintain control. The film highlights the precarious nature of this illicit industry, where employees are often positioned as fall guys for their superiors.

Despite an ensemble cast featuring Justin Timberlake and Ben Affleck, the film received largely negative critical reception. Critics pointed to a haphazard script that failed to capitalize on its intriguing premise, resulting in an 8% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and a 36 out of 100 score on Metacritic. While the story is set in Costa Rica, production actually occurred in Puerto Rico and at Princeton University during 2012. Ultimately, the film serves as a cautionary tale about the intersection of unchecked digital power and the moral compromises required to survive within a criminal enterprise.
