Jackie Chan’s 100th film was a historical epic that failed to win over critics
In short: Released to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the 1911 Revolution, the historical drama 1911 marked Jackie Chan’s 100th film as an actor. Despite its ambitious scope and high-profile production, the film faced significant backlash from Western critics, who dismissed it as a dull, propagandistic project that lacked narrative cohesion.
Directed by Jackie Chan and Zhang Li, 1911 was designed as a grand historical pageant covering the Wuchang Uprising, the Second Guangzhou Uprising, and the eventual abdication of the emperor Puyi in 1912. The production was a massive undertaking, beginning in September 2010 and wrapping in March 2011. It featured an ensemble cast including Li Bingbing, Joan Chen, and Winston Chao, the latter of whom was portraying Sun Yat-sen for the fifth time in his career.
While the film received praise for its cinematography and early battle sequences, the critical reception was overwhelmingly negative. Western reviewers frequently highlighted the film’s poor structure and its nature as a state-endorsed propaganda vehicle. Critics like Maggie Lee and Stephen Cole noted that the film felt inaccessible and lacked the spark expected from a veteran performer like Chan. Even within China, despite government endorsement, the film struggled to generate strong ticket sales, and it was notably barred from release in Taiwan due to import quotas.
The film’s failure to resonate is often attributed to its overly reverent approach to history, which critics felt turned a complex revolution into a dry, illustrated lesson. By avoiding sensitive political topics and focusing on a rigid, commemorative narrative, the film struggled to function as either effective education or compelling entertainment. For many, the project served as a stark contrast to the more dynamic work typically associated with Chan’s century-long filmography, leaving it as a polarizing entry in his career.
